The short answer

Who owns or governs Godolphin, and what does it do?

Godolphin was founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, who created the stable in 1992. It describes itself as a global thoroughbred breeding operation and horseracing team, with its home in Dubai and operations in Europe, Australia, Japan and America. Its horses are trained by its own trainers, Saeed bin Suroor and Charlie Appleby, and by public trainers in several countries, and its stallions stand under the Darley brand. Godolphin says its horses have won more than 9,000 races worldwide.

Ownership and governance

Godolphin’s website describes it as a global thoroughbred breeding operation and horseracing team founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. It does not publish a legal form, accounts or funding details. According to Wikipedia, it is the Maktoum family’s private racing stable. Its Dubai office is at Al Quoz Stables, which Godolphin says was established in 1992.

On 22 December 2015 Godolphin announced that Sheikh Mohammed’s racing and breeding interests would merge into one operation under the Godolphin name in the new year, with Darley, which had held the bloodstock holdings, kept as a brand to promote stallions. At that time it gave its size as 2,000 horses in training, 2,500 breeding stock and 1,500 staff.

Godolphin now says it has around 2,500 horses in training, stallions and breeding stock, with stables, studs and farms in the UAE, the UK, Ireland, the US, Australia and Japan. Its in-house trainers are Saeed bin Suroor and Charlie Appleby, and William Buick is its retained rider. It also has horses with public trainers in France, Australia, the US, the UK and Japan. Emirates is listed as its partner.
