About the race

The Haskell Stakes, run as the NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes, is a Grade 1, USD 1 million race over 1 1/8 miles on dirt for three-year-olds at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey, held in July. Monmouth Park says it began in 1968 as the Amory L. Haskell Handicap for older horses, named for the first president and chairman of the Monmouth Park Jockey Club. In 1981 the name passed to an invitational for three-year-olds, which became a stakes race in 2020. The winner earns a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Preakness winner Journalism won on 19 July 2025 by half a length from Gosger for trainer Michael McCarthy and jockey Umberto Rispoli, before a crowd of 41,876, the largest since 2015. The 59th running, on 18 July 2026, went to Baby Vino, ridden by Jorge Vargas, Jr. His trainer, Lindsay Schultz, became the first woman to train a Haskell winner.
