About the race
The Oaks is a Group 1 Classic over 1m 4f 6y at Epsom Downs for three-year-old fillies only. Epsom states that it was first run in 1779 as the Oakes Stakes, a year before the Derby, making it the second oldest of the five Classics. It has been staged at Epsom every year except 1915 to 1918 and 1940 to 1945, when it moved to Newmarket. It is run on Ladies Day, the Friday of the Betfred Derby Festival, and carried a prize fund of GBP 625,000 in 2026.
The 2025 running on 6 June went to Minnie Hauk, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, ahead of her stablemate Whirl. Thundering On won on 5 June 2026 for trainer Joseph O’Brien and jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle. Epsom lists the 2027 Oaks for Friday 4 June.
