About the race
The Prix Maurice de Gheest is a Group 1 race over 1,300 metres on the straight course at Deauville-La Touques, run by France Galop in August during the Meeting de Deauville Barrière. It is open to three-year-olds and upwards and was worth EUR 380,000 in 2026. France Galop says it was created in 1922 and made a Group 1 in 1994. Its full title is the ARC Prix Maurice de Gheest, Fonds Européen de l’Élevage; in 2026 it was also run in memory of Louis Romanet, the former head of France Galop.
On 10 August 2025 Sajir, ridden by Oisin Murphy, won by a length and three-quarters from Lazzat. France Galop said it was trainer André Fabre’s first win in the race. The IFHA rated that running at 117.25, joint 60th in the world for 2025. On 9 August 2026 Samangan won by a short head for the Aga Khan Studs and Francis-Henri Graffard.
