About the race
The St James’s Palace Stakes is run over one mile (1,600 metres) on turf at Royal Ascot and is for three-year-old colts. Ascot says it is named after the Tudor royal residence, was first run in 1834, when the Derby winner Plenipotentiary walked over, and became a Group 1 race in 1988. It often attracts runners from the British, French and Irish 2,000 Guineas. In 2025 and 2026 it was run on the Tuesday, the first day of the meeting. Royal Ascot 2027 runs from 15 to 19 June; Ascot has not yet published the 2027 order of running.
On 17 June 2025 Field Of Gold, the Irish Guineas winner, won for Juddmonte, trainers John and Thady Gosden and jockey Colin Keane, with the French Guineas winner Henri Matisse second and Ruling Court third. In 2026 the 2,000 Guineas winner Bow Echo won for trainer George Boughey and jockey Billy Loughnane, beating Gstaad by a short head.
